Tips For The
Treatment Of Restless Leg Syndrome
-
It is important to know the particulars of the syndrome.
There is no universal treatment, medicine, or maneuver that
will eliminate the problem entirely.
-
Though restless leg syndrome is rarely caused by a disease
state or deficiency, if it is impairing your sleep, see
your doctor to try to determine whether prescription drugs
or medical conditions such as anemia, renal failure, low
folic acid or B12 levels, or low calcium are causing your
discomfort. In some people, a low level of ferritin (an
iron protein complex) in the blood has been associated with
restless leg syndrome, even if the person is not anemic. In
this situation, iron supplements may help.
-
Decrease, and then eliminate, your
intake of caffeine in any form.
-
Massage, stretching, and cooling the legs in water
sometimes help in decreasing the irritative sensations.
They're worth a try.
-
An exercise program that gradually increases endurance,
especially combined with passive stretching, may
help.
-
Depression is a common consequence of restless leg
syndrome, and if this is a significant problem for you,
consult your doctor.
-
Medicines to treat restless leg syndrome include
antiparkinsonian drugs such as L-dopa; benzodiazepine
sedatives; opioid painkillers such as acetaminophen with
codeine; and anticonvulsants.
Remember, restless leg syndrome occurs at rest. If you
regularly have pain or tenderness, especially a tightness or
cramping in the calf muscles while exercising, see your
doctor.
